The 2015 Randall's Christmas Newsletter

2015, as it turns out, was a strange year. First of all it rained in Texas. We sort of forgot what it was like to have water fall out of the sky. It not only rained, it rained a lot. It flooded all over the place and we now again have lakes in Texas. It's raining right now as I write this. Secondly, Zyvex Labs actually developed a product and has sold a few of them. Thirdly, Patice got a new car (she only buys one every other decade). Fourthly, Ashley started writing for a food magazine. And fifthly, Ian became a lumberjack (Well he looked like one). To learn more about this and other strangeness read on.

Ian Lumber Jack
Ian Moves Downtown.

Ian, wanting to get closer to work, and to escape the drudgeries of suburban life moved into a highrise apartment in downtown Dallas with a couple of his co-workers from Equinox. Ian's career goals included being a personal trainer to the rich and famous. He appears to be well on his way. Included in his list of many well todo clients, a member of a Luxury Car Dealership Dynasty(who kindly arranged the aquisition of Patrice's latest vehicle). Another client, having Ian over to his humble abode, was showing off some statues, and when someone asked where he got such impressive relicas, the client's retort was, "Replicas??!! these used to sit in Napolean's Mansion!" In addition to training others, Ian is continuing to enter Physique Tournaments and while he has not yet brought home the gold, he still looks pretty good (see photo). As mentioned above Patrice got a new car. Not to be outdone, Ian also got a new car, a bigger and "meaner" SUV than his mom got. He is also dabbling in another line of work as a Lumberjack (see other photo) or possibly mountain biker.

Ashley Randall, Food Critic
Ashley Multi-Tasks:

In addition to her day job, which we can now reveal as selling Google Fiber in Austin, as foretold above, Ashley is now a writer for the online "Austin Food Magazine". She has two articles Romantic Spots: No Va Kitchen-Bar" and 5 Great Dates Spots for this Fall in Austin. She is also continuing to pedal Fine Wines and Spirits in the Greater Austin Area. She continues to study a variety of Martial Arts and demonstrates choking techniques at times when she considers it appropriate. Ashley has also become a foster parent for pets in dire need and has brought a kitty-cat "MeowMix" back from near death and will soon have the kitty adopted into a loving family. THIS JUST IN: Ashley interviewed and was accepted into a professional school for relationship caoching. She is excited about starting the courses in May of next year.

Patrice and her furry children
Patrice Gets new Wheels:

In 1996 when the Randall's First got to Belgium, our first lease car was a Mercedes, so when we got back to the States Patrice bought one in 1999. 16 years later, when John talked Patrice into getting a new vehicle, the young man who looked at Patrice's Mercedes came back and told us we had a time capsule, the 1999 Mercedes looked like it just rolled off the showroom floor. After we assured him that this was just German maintenance and we were not aliens from the last century, we left a short time later with exactly the car that Patrice wanted. Since then, she has actually let John drive it, but Wolfy is still forbidden to enter. When Patrice is not looking for an out of the way parking spot, and juggling her diet to avoid a number of food aditives she has become sensitive to, she works on her art painting projects, and remodeling and repairing the house.

      John stays busy

2015 has turned out to be a very good year for Zyvex Labs and our associated company NanoRetina. We are on a solid track with Rahul, Bill, and our fabulous partners in Israel leading the way to begin healing the blind in 2016. See photo of Nanoretina in action in Israel. Our Army Research Office program to develop fabrication technology for building quantum computers is going well and we hope to get a follow on program next year. Thanks to this program we now have a product "ZyVector" which turns a Scanning Tunneling Microscope into a Hydrogen Depassivation Lithography tool. Trust me this is really geeky cool! Buy now before the price goes up! But wait there is more! Any order by the end of the year (any year) and I will include a Zetcher! We have sold four of these which is a great start. This transition from a research firm to one that does research and also has products has led to some interesting new roles for Zyvexians. John, Josh, James, and Udi have all been Booth Bunnies in 2015.

We also managed to win a DARPA "Atoms to Product" program. Really, I am not making this up! This program has led us to hire three new people, Jonny, Joseph and Scott, all great additions to our team. We are also working with Dr. Gary Maale (and his son Matt that worked for us this summer) and Rob Rennacker at UT Dallas on exciting projects.

John has been so busy at Zyvex Labs that Patrice claims to not remember seeing him in August and Sept when he went to St. Louis; Oak Ridge, Tennessee; California (three times); Austin; Belgium; The Netherlands; and Germany. John also continues to take saxophone lessons, work on painting robots, and adore Patrice.

Pet Report: Wolfy is a year older and not quite as furry. He managed to get his underbelly fur so knotted up that it was impervious to brushing and Patrice threatened to give him a belly buzz cut. John, trying to avoid such an ignominious fate for the furball, snuck Wolfy out of the house early before Patrice is up to take him to the groomer. (This is tricky becuase Wolfy gets very excited when he knows he is going in a car. He starts whining and barking in anticipation of all of the big metal sheep that he will attempt to herd from inside the car by running around IN THE CAR and barking vociferously while distributing dog slobber on all the car windows to show that he means business). John and Wolfy ask the groomer to do her best to brush out the knots and, only as a last resort, cut them out. In spite of this plea, when John returned to retreive our love leach, he had an essentially bald belly. I don't want to say that he looked silly (sort of like he had bangs all along his perimeter), but he refused to have his picture taken.

The Relativity Report:

The Randall Round up: John's side of the family is hard to keep up with, but here goes starting with the youngest additions. The newest addition is more or less virtual. Shelly, daughter of John's sister Cindy, and husband Matt who already have a toddler David are working to adopt a child, more details next year. Shelly continues to work at Ricoh, and Matt while teaching at UH and consulting looks like he has landed a job that he is very pleased with. Cody, (son of John's Brother Mike) and Wife Kelsie (not to be confused with John's Sister's daughter Kelsie) had a baby girl and named her Parker. This portion of the Randall family is living in El Paso where Cody is serving in the Army. The other daugher of Cindy, the other Kelsie, and her toddler daughter Rilynn moved out of Cindy's crowded house and is continuing to work as a blood sucker (Phlebotomist). John's Brother Mike's daughter Kalli has won so many beauty contests that Minnesota guys are appearently too intimidated to wed. Kalli did come to visit Mike and wife Margret and they all took a trip to Costa Rica. Margret continues to teach at the University of St. Thomas. Mike and Margret continue to be active in the local Biker Crowd. Cindy and husband Skip continue to churn out and sell gymnastics garb and take care of John's Mom Vee who is still active and is 7 years short of a century.

Ashley as Cleopatra and Vee.

Caitlin and Annabelle
The Stepchinski Side: Not to be outdone on new additions, Caitlin, daughter of Patirce's brother Nigel, brought into this world the beautiful Annabelle. Caitlin, father Tyler, and Annabelle are all doing fine. When she is not holding Annabelle, Caitlin works as a forensic nurse. John made the mistake of asking about what her work was like and Caitlin replied, "Oh its great! We got to dig up skeletonized remains just a few days ago!" This is when I am reminded that Caitlin is the daugher of Rhonda and Nigel who each have many decades on the Houston Police Force. Nigel and Rhonda are still also working events and have now gone to an order of magnitude more rock concerts than the average teenager. They explained that the crowds are usually reasonably well behaved, but there are exceptions. At a recent Billie Joel show Nigel had to deal with a patron that rushed the stage screaming that Billie Joel was the devil. Nigel removed the young man and attempted to assess why he did this. He did not get much or a reason, but the guy justified his actions by claiming that he was a veteran and had fought and died for his country. Nigel told me the guy was clearly crazy, but looked pretty good for a dead man. Rhonda and Nigel's son Kyle is still an Aggie working on a degree in business.
Patrice's other brother Patrick and wife Erica are still living in Clear Lake down near NASA, but their youngins have flown the coop. Their children Leanne and Alan are living in other cities. Leanne has graduated with a geosciences degree from Trinty University and is now working for the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. Alan is studying Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Patrice's Brother Patrick is still working as a consulting engineer.

The Randalls wish you a happy and prosperous 2016.
