The MNE 2022 micrograph contest is now closed. Please see all award winners and entries below. 

The rules include the following:

  • Entries have to be of a single image taken with a microscope and should not be significantly altered.
  • Video entries must be 30 seconds or less.
  • There is no restriction with respect to the subject matter.
  • Electron and ion micrographs have to be black and white.
  • Contestants must submit a completed Entry Form.

In 2022, 47 entries were submitted from 12 countries, including:

Austria, Denmark, Germany, Israel, India, the Netherlands, Singapore, New Zealand, Finland, Switzerland,  Turkey, and the United States. 

The judges were:

  • Dieter Kern – University of Tuebingen
  • Massimo De Vittorio – Universita del Salento
  • Michael Kraft – KU Leuven 

    *Please note that the judges have the prerogative to change the title of the Micrographs. 

There were 4 awards:

  • 1st Place
  • 2nd Place
  • 3rd Place
  • MNE People’s Choice

There were also 9 Honorable Mentions selected.

The Judges awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, as well as honorable mentions.

MNE 2022 participants who voted, selected the MNEer’s Choice Award.

These award winners will become Microfamous (certificate) and nano-rich (100 Euros).

Though Honorable Mention recipients will not receive a certificate or cash, they (along with the 4 award winners) will have their micrographs displayed in perpetuity on this page.


1st Place
