The MNE 2023 micrograph contest is now closed. Please see all award winners and entries below. 

The rules include the following:

  • Entries have to be of a single image taken with a microscope and should not be significantly altered.
  • Video entries must be 30 seconds or less.
  • There is no restriction with respect to the subject matter.
  • Electron and ion micrographs have to be black and white.
  • Contestants must submit a completed Entry Form.

In 2023, 75 entries were submitted. The entries came from:

Portugal, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Italy, UK, Turkey, China, Taiwan, Canada, Mexico

The judges were:

  • Prof. Irene Fernandez–Cuesta – University of Hamburg
  • Prof. Regina Luttge – TU Eindhoven
  • Dr. Alex Liddle – NIST
     

There were 4 awards:

  • 1st Place
  • 2nd Place
  • 3rd Place
  • MNE People’s Choice

There were also 5 Honorable Mentions selected.


1st Place

"Seeds of Destruction", The first place micrograph contest winner, submitted by Mehran Mirmohammadi from Aalto University in Finland.

2nd Place

"The Brain's Midnight Symphony: Neuronal Urbanism (or) Welcome to the Matrix", The second place micrograph contest winner, submitted by George Flamourakis from TU Delft in the Netherlands.

3rd Place

"The Tiny Eye of Sauron", The third place micrograph contest entry, submitted by Raphael Dawant from Université de Sherbrooke in Canada.

MNEer’s Choice

"The lil'l hidden GHOST", The MNEer's Choice Award micrograph contest winner, submitted by Garia de Marzo and Valentina Antonaci from Istituto Italiano di Technologia in Italy.
